Dear Friends of Canadian L’Abri,

One of the unexpected joys of this past week occurred as my four year old daughter and I read our nightly portion of L. Frank Baum’s, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Although we took up the story in a forest through which Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Woodman and the (no longer) Cowardly Lion were traveling, we soon found ourselves thinking about Advent, the season of expectation and preparation.

Dear Friends of Canadian L’Abri:

It has been a while since we have communicated with you about the progress of our Bowen Island branch. Doug and Maggie Curry have directed the branch for the four years since we acquired the property in mid-2003. Mark and Terri Ryan have worked beside them for the past two years after serving in the L’Abri branch in Southborough, Massachusetts. There have been challenges along the way, but God has blessed this ministry to the many students who have come with their questions and issues.

Dear Friends of Canadian L'Abri,

Having again entered the Advent season I, doubtless alongside many of
you, am reading Matthew and Luke's accounts of the birth of Christ. While in
past seasons I have pondered over the supernatural features surrounding
Christ's birth -think virgin conception and angelic appearances-this season I
find myself moved and encouraged by the exuberance of God. While Christmas
cards and seasonal homilies typically draw our attention to the fact of
Jesus' birth; we ought to also notice the way in which this birth of Christ is
announced. Indeed it seems as if God the Father can hardly hold back
from declaring the coming of the Son into our midst! As Jacob van Bruggen
summarizes, "through Gabriel to Zechariah and Mary; through angels to
the shepherds; through the prophetic inspirations of Elizabeth, Zechariah,
Simeon and Anna to many around them; and through an angel in a dream to
Joseph;" through these various persons and means God repeatedly reveals
the coming of His Son.

Dear Friends of Canadian L'Abri,

In reading up about our new home, we have discovered that Bowen Island
and its forests which flank us, is part of the lush West Coast temperate
rainforest that grows from Alaska to Northern California. More than
merely finding ourselves located in this stretch of forest, Bowen actually
lies between biogeoclimactic zones: the Coastal Western Hemlock Zone and the
Coastal Douglas-fir Zone. As a result, the Bowen forest shares
characteristics of both and is home to a diverse species of wildlife
(the Curry & Ryan families not counted!).

Dear friends of Canadian L’Abri,

It was approximately a year ago that I wrote to you announcing a L’Abri Conference to be held in Vancouver B.C. in August 2004. A lot of water has gone under a lot of bridges since that time and on behalf of the Canadian Branch on Bowen Island and the Directors, Doug and Maggie Curry, as well as the Canadian Board, I would like to update you all as to what has transpired over the last number of months.
